Skincare Comparison

Hyaluronic acid, ranked on what actually penetrates.

Hyaluronic acid is the most-marketed humectant in skincare — but molecular weight (single vs multi-MW) and concentration make a 10× difference in hydration depth and skin-feel. This page ranks 11 popular HA products on hydration score, clinical evidence, and price per ml.

The 6 hyaluronic acid formats explained

1

Multi-molecular-weight HA Best standard

Hydration: 5/5 · Evidence: 5/5

The modern formulation standard. Combines low-MW HA (penetration into upper stratum corneum), medium-MW HA (surface water retention), and high-MW HA (occlusive surface film). Multi-MW HA is the most-cited HA format in dermatology literature since 2018 (Bayer 2018 showed multi-MW > single-MW for skin hydration and TEWL). Found in The Ordinary HA 2% + B5, CeraVe, La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5, and Paula's Choice Booster.

Best for: everyone except the most oily skin types. The default HA format for serious skincare routines.

2

Low-MW HA (<50 kDa)

Hydration: 2/5 · Evidence: 3/5

Small enough to penetrate the upper layers of the stratum corneum. Provides deeper hydration than high-MW HA but lacks surface smoothing. Often combined with other HA molecular weights in multi-MW stacks. Essendoubi 2016 showed low-MW HA penetrates the epidermis; high-MW HA does not.

Best for: layering under heavier products, when deeper hydration is the goal.

3

Medium-MW HA (50–500 kDa)

Hydration: 3/5 · Evidence: 3/5

Sits primarily on the skin surface, drawing water in from the environment and holding it in the upper stratum corneum. The most common HA weight in mass-market products. Provides immediate plumping but minimal long-term barrier effect.

Best for: daily hydration under moisturizer, combination skin.

4

High-MW HA (>500 kDa)

Hydration: 2/5 · Evidence: 2/5

Too large to penetrate the skin. Forms a surface film that smooths and provides immediate plumping. Best for dry or mature skin that needs a topical occlusive effect. The Neutrogena Hydro Boost line uses high-MW HA.

Best for: dry/mature skin, post-procedure calming, when an immediate smoothing effect is desired.

5

Hydrolyzed HA / nano-HA

Hydration: 3/5 · Evidence: 3/5

Chemically broken-down HA fragments that penetrate more easily than native HA. Often used in Asian (K-beauty, J-beauty) skincare. The Ordinary's Marine Hyaluronics uses hydrolyzed HA combined with marine-derived glycoproteins.

Best for: lightweight hydration, oily or combination skin.

6

Sodium hyaluronate (mixed)

Hydration: 3/5 · Evidence: 4/5

The salt form of HA, slightly smaller and more stable than native HA. Used in most mass-market products because it is cheaper to produce and more stable in solution. Effective at surface hydration; less evidence for penetration than hydrolyzed forms. Olay Regenerist and many Neutrogena products use sodium hyaluronate.

Best for: daily hydration, layering with actives (more stable than native HA).

How to layer hyaluronic acid (and why most people get it wrong)

HA is a humectant — it draws water TO the skin. If there's no water available, it draws water FROM the deeper layers of your skin, which dehydrates you over time. The "HA makes my skin drier" complaint is almost always this mistake. Here's how to layer it correctly:

  1. Apply to damp skin, not dry skin. The #1 HA mistake. After cleansing, leave skin damp. Apply HA serum directly onto damp skin — it pulls the surface water into the stratum corneum. On dry skin, HA pulls water from deeper layers.
  2. Use within 60 seconds of cleansing. The damp window is short. Pat-dry excess water, but do not let skin air-dry completely before applying HA.
  3. Layer HA BEFORE moisturizer. HA is a humectant, not an occlusive. It draws water in but cannot prevent evaporation on its own. Always seal with a moisturizer (ceramide-based preferred) to lock in hydration.
  4. Use in humid climates, not dry climates (without sealing). In Bangkok, Singapore, or coastal AU, HA on damp skin works beautifully. In air-conditioned offices or cold dry winters, HA needs heavy sealing or it can pull water OUT of the skin.
  5. Pair with niacinamide for barrier support. Niacinamide (vitamin B3) + HA is a clinically-tested combo. Niacinamide reduces TEWL (transepidermal water loss) so HA-trapped water stays in the skin. The Ordinary HA 2% + B5 uses this combo.
  6. HA pairs with most actives — gentle enough for retinol nights. Unlike AHAs/BHA, HA doesn't exfoliate. Use it on the same nights as retinol to buffer irritation and support the skin barrier during the retinization period.
  7. Skip HA if you live in very dry climates without humidifier. In arid climates (desert, high-altitude, winter heating), HA without sealing can worsen dehydration. Switch to occlusive-rich formulas (ceramide creams, squalane).

Side effects & warnings

Hyaluronic acid is one of the safest skincare actives — it's a molecule your body naturally produces. Side effects are rare and almost always related to the formulation, not the HA itself.

Common (mostly application-related)

  • Skin feels tighter or drier after application — usually means HA is pulling water FROM skin (apply on damp skin + seal with moisturizer)
  • Mild stickiness if too much is applied — use 2–3 drops for the whole face
  • Pilling under sunscreen or makeup — wait 60 seconds between layers
  • Rare contact dermatitis to preservatives or vehicle ingredients (not HA itself)

Stop use and see a dermatologist if

  • Persistent redness, itching, or swelling after application (true allergy)
  • Hives or rash that develops within hours of use
  • Worsening of eczema or rosacea — switch to a single-ingredient HA with fewer additives
  • Active skin infection or open wounds on the application area
  • Recent laser, microneedling, or chemical peel (wait 24–48 hours before resuming HA)

Drug interactions: None known for topical HA. HA does not interact with oral medications. If you are using prescription topical treatments (tretinoin, azelaic acid), HA can be layered on the same night as a buffer.
